For this, please try and read some of the reference of this Holy Orders in the Bible particularly in the New Testament. We will only simplify our discussion with the common understanding of the Bible's writings about these Orders. Thus,

Bishop; also referred as “Overseer,” from the greek word “episkopos.”

 -Acts 20:28

 -1Timothy 3:1-2

 -Titus 1:5-7

Priest; also referred as Elders, from the greek word “presbuteros,” and also called presbyter.

 -1Timothy 5:17(Responsibility)

 -James 5:14-15

Deacon; from the greek word “diakonos,” it means servant.

 -Acts 6:1-6

 -1 Timothy 3:8-10

There are other references as to where we can find “elders,” “overseer” and deacon in the English Bible but we need not discuss all due to limited time. There are also references of chief priests in the gospels and priests in the Old Testament (i.e. book of Leviticus) but we will not deal with them although it is important resources also in the understanding of the temple worship of the Jews. Last time we studied and learned about the problems that the early Christians encountered in Acts 6 and how they managed to settle this problem. In our next meeting on September 11, we will deal with the conversion of Saul on Acts 9:1-31 whom we will later know as Saint Paul who had written some of the Epistles that we read in the New Testament. While reading, you may want to consider asking yourself why would God convert someone who had been persecuting Christians? What is the purpose of Saul's conversion? How does the other disciple thought of his conversion? Who accompanied Saul to the Apostles and what could be their reaction?

I hope we will see each other on September. May you have a blessed Ubon yasumi this August.

Deacon Glenn

Reflection

Read and reflect on our readings today:

Wisdom 12:13, 16-19 (Book from the Apocrypha)
Psalm 86:11-16
Romans 8:18-25
Matthew 13:24-30,36-43

Weeds are part of planting. Have you manifested Jesus in your lives lately? Our Lord Jesus Christ manifestation to the world is our mission in our Christian ministry in our present lives. We have so many opportunities to manifest our Lord in every aspect of our lives. Some of this can be done even by children. Why don't we try some simple things like greeting our neighbors every day, or do a little kindness or mercy to our least brothers and sisters. Perhaps we can even visit the sick in the hospital or those who are in prison. There are many ways which we can do to make a difference in our society. And "practice makes perfect," as the saying goes.

This Sunday our Gospel tells us about the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12). It describe those who are subjects to the Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven as Matthew calls it. And who are these people? They are the merciful, the humble and pure in hearts, the peacemakers, the poor, and even those who are persecuted for righteousness sake. These people are more likely to receive the Kingdom of God and they are also given mission to make a change in the world so that even the world will be a place where the Kingdom of God is felt. So the world is now also being established as the Kingdom of God because of these people. We hope to be part of this mission also and contribute in our own capacity.

Our English Service in the Cathedral of St. Matthew's in Nagoya is every second Sunday of the month. So on February 13, 2011 I hope to see you there. The complete address of the Cathedral is:
Saint Matthew's Cathedral
2-53-1, Meigetsu-cho, Showa-Ku, Nagoya (Postal Code) 466-0034

If you come by train, stop at Gokiso eki exit no. 4 and find the convenience store (Circle K)beside the police box and turn right, about 40 meters on your right is the Cathedral.

Come One and come all and lets celebrate the Holy Eucharist together.

resume of English Service Mass on November 14

Hello folks,

Please be informed of our English Service Mass on November 14, 2010 at 5pm. Thank You for those who attended the Diocesan Gathering in Inuyama city. It was a lovely event for the diocese of Chubu to gather japanese and foreigners for a meeting of new friends and a wonderful dinner. The event was an opportunity to witness one of the Cultural dance in the Philippines particularly the Cordillera Region up north in the Philippines.

The Cathedral of St.Matthew's opened a bazaar last November 7 (Sunday), we hope to be part of the bazaar next event. Fr. Tim Nomura invited us for a "nabe" party after our English Service on December 12, 2010, so we do not need to bring food on that date. This party is to celebrate those who got married this year so we will be expecting those celebrants and their families. This will take place in the Cathedral Hall.

Our Main celebrant in the Holy Eucharist this November 14 is Rev. Ambrosia Kaori Goto. Our preacher is Deacon Glenn B. The cleansing/curing of the ten lepers gives us a message of hope that Jesus in such a marvelous way heals us whenever we pray "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." It is a powerful prayer. Let us not forget to give thanks and praise to God wherever we are and whatever time of the day.
Let us pray: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. It is a time of sharing ourselves, coming to know one another. Many people are very talkative, and topics of conversations vary greatly.
